19 October - Return Of The Native
When the teams that signed up for the 2008 MSOKC Ricart.com Toughman 225 Yamaha Can endurance race considered their competition the didn't know that the defending 2007 champions, Creech Racing, had a secret weapon on the way. That's because lead driver was well known to have relocated himself to Somona, California for the Jim Russell Racing Mechanics school there. The competition was counting on 2500 miles and high airfares to keep the team's lead driver far, far away. Lulled as they were into a false sense of security, the the nine other teams arrived Sunday morning the truth was out there. Eric had returned.
Having found a personal sponsor for this return to his roots (rumor had it a mysterious behind the scenes team fan going by the name "Grandma" was responsible), it was not a guaranty that the younger Creech was going to return to his previous pace at Circleville Raceway Park. He hadn't seen the plave since May. And there were whispered concerns about his stamina - he'd only driven a real kart for 12 laps since he left Cetral Ohio (sorry, one night of indoor karting doesn't count). Those concerns turned out to be unfounded.
Joining Eric was 2007 teammate (and sweetie) Tracy and multi MSOKC champ Mike Yoerger. While the driver's talents complimented each other, their size did not and the fact that the team had one of the club's shortest drivers (Tracy) paired with one of the club's tallest (Mike) did not go unnoticed by many. Nevetheless, if that was the only bit of adversity that the team encountered it would be a good day. On the adversity detail was team owner/manager Dave Creech, crewman Mark Joann Creech in charge of catering and team attitude management (those go hand in hand) and Julie & Jim of Conlin SpeedSports to co-manage the race.
In the next few weeks we will be reporting on the full details of this race as will as a full report on the RoboPong 200 as well as the last few races of the season including some notable performances by Daniel Legg and Jason Barfield. Check back often to get your off-season karting fix.
