August '04 Reports
28 August - A Short, Soggy Night
Even with a late arrival to the track after getting Julie settled into her dorm at Ashland University (her absence is why we have no pics for this report) the oppressive heat had us drenched within minutes of getting out of the van. There was a small period of relief as the cold front came through but that was followed by heavy rains drenching us again. We were able to get two heats in for Dana to make it a complete event for her but Tracy's raceday will conclude on September 11. More...
19 August - We Top 10k
We are very proud to announce that today this web site passed the 10,000 visit mark (since 2000) with the increase in activity this week. For a small, simple web site designed as a on-line newsletter for family and friends, that's not too shabby. A big thank you to all our faithful readers. We sincerely appreciate your support.
17 August - Fastest Man On Batteries
From the salt flats of Utah comes word of team friend and part time karter, Roger Schroer's 308 mph run in the Ohio State University Buckeye Bullet electric car. Unfortunately, they were not able to back that up the next day (as required by Land Speed Record rules) with another run within a certain percent due to a differential problem. (Which begs the question: In a vehicle designed to go dead straight for five miles, why do you even need a diff anyway?).

The 308 mph speed was over the fifth and final measured mile and official timing showed that the Bullet was doing 315 mph and still accelerating when it exiting the timed sections. That makes Roger the Fastest Man On Batteries, unofficially. The team hopes to repair the car to make another two-run attempt by the end of the week to make it official. God speed Roger and Bullet team. For more check out www.roadtobonneville.com or www.buckeyebullet.com.
15 August - Fear And Loathing In Circleville
With all due apologies to Hunter S. Thompson, it was a strange and powerful visit to the track August 15. We managed to pick up two more wins and a couple of 2nds but it was a disturbing day overall. More...
12 August - More Racing Sisters
While racing sisters are still much more rare than racing brothers or even father/daughter teams, we're not the only ones out there. We've learned of racing sisters in the Dallas/Ft Worth area that are enjoying racing as a family every bit as much as we do. In fact, mom and dad, Kelley and Mike Engstrom, even operate a kart shop near Texas Motor Speedway.

Amber Martinez-Engstrom has been racing karts for about 10 years and has racked up national and regional championships along the way. She was even involved in the 2002 Red Bull Driver Search, placing 3rd in the Dallas round. Amber's kid sister, Kaley, has been racing since she was 6 and even won the North Texas Karters Kid Kart championship in her first try in 2001. The Engstroms sound like another example of families that race together stay togehter. Families that make karting what it is.

Y'all oughtta check out KAM Karting Supply. They have a full line of parts, accessories, safety equipment and supplies. If you don't want to go all the way to DFW to pick up your parts, they have a slick on-line store that makes them just as close as your keyboard.
09 August - Dispatch Article Published
Last we heard, the article about our team was scheduled to appear on August 14 or 15 but as often happens in the fast-paced world of journalism, we got moved up to today, Monday, August 9. Look for familiar faces in the Life section of the Columbus Dispatch.
Dana pushes on a new set of Vegas.
07 August - Tire Test For NKN and Another Win
Our Saturday started early with an invite by National Kart News to do a comparative tire test between various compounds of Vega Tyres. (Watch this site for notice of that forthcoming article.) With the tire tests completed it was time to focus on the evening of racing ahead of us. It was a fair night (with the exception of some blatant blocking in Tracy's second heat) with Tracy claiming another second and Dana another win in the heats races. Both gals did well to solidify their places in the standings. More...
05 August - Late Thanks Yous
We suddenly realized that we had a few visitors out to our races in July that we forgot to thanks for being there. On July 10 we had the pleasure of having an international delegation of visitors as Dana's teaching partner at Goddard Preschool Dublin, Bobbi Daley, her husband Tommy and baby Grant came out with Bobbi's mom Teresa who was visiting from Canada. Unfortunately, we were struggling with our first night race of the season and hospitality wasn't up to our usual standard. Nevertheless, we appreciated them coming out and I know Dana enjoyed having Bobbi and her family there.

A couple weeks later, Jack Waldeck, who attends flight school with Dana came out to see her do her hobby. The invite came in class just after Jack mentioned that he couldn't picture Dana fueling up a plane. Well, away from the track Dana looks like a typical young woman with typical attention to fashion and appearance. At the track though her priorities change and Jack was able to see her pressuring tires and turning wrenches. By the end of the night he said he could easily see Dana refueling her plane.

Thanks to Bobbi, Tommy, Teresa and Jack for coming out. Your presence gives our team a boost at the races even though some of us are too busy to be good hosts.
02 August - Roger That: Our (Slim) Connection To The Buckeye Bullet
Faithful readers of this web site may remember Roger Schroer from our February Florida testing adventures. Roger is the occasional karter and a senior test driver at the Technical Research Center in Marysville who entertained us on the way down to Palmetto with stories from his years of R & D driving. He also helped out and did a few laps on our first track day in the Sunshine State. Well, look what our old friend Roger has gotten himself involved in now: www.buckeyebullet.com.
