2004 MSOKC Super Can Runner Up
08 December - The St. James Treatment, Day One
Day one was really just about getting there. There being Goodyear, Arizona, suburban Phoenix. Dana left first thing in the morning, insurance against weather, mechanical, air traffic, flight crew or any one of a hundred other delays that would jeopardize her getting there on Day One. Activities for the Lyn St. James Foundation Driver Development Program were set to start at 8 am Thursday so Dana being delayed overnight was out of the question.
Being a little short staffed at work and not wanting to take more time off than absolutely necessary, I left early Wednesday evening and if I got delayed it would not be the end of the world. Things ran on schedule for both of us (because we purposely avoided Chicago O'Hare when making the reservations) Dana arriving mid afternoon and I late in the evening.
(These rental car companies kill me. "Would you like to upgrade to the Dodge Durango for only $10 a day more?" I was asked by the counter agent. "No, if the racing budget could afford a car that was $10 a day more, I wouldn't have rented the cheapest Korean tin can with wheels on the net from the rental car company with the longest line and the fewest shuttle buses. Why? Why, sir, would I want to pay half again the rental rate for a Durango when I obviously rented the cheapest car you had?" That's what I wanted to say but what I actually said was "No thank you, better stay with the Rio [or whatever was promised on the net] and keep the rate cheap" And what did I find in stall 117? The Durango. Nice try fella but I travel constantly and know that you ran out of cars.)
Dana had a chance to meet some of the other DDP participants on the ride from the airport to the hotel and over dinner. She was a little surprised to find that most of her co-students were not only younger but had been racing longer than her (well we always knew she had gotten a late start). Many has some karting and many had stock car or other oval racing experience. After dinner all the DDP'ers watched the hockey-based movie The Miracle back at the hotel. I showed shortly after that and just in time for lights out. The fun would start early
