21 April - Kids Learn About Karting
Dana demo's her safety equipment
When was the last time you brought your go kart to work?
We did April 21 as a little treat for the kids in Dana's class at the Goddard Preschool in Dublin. In conjunction with other activities celebrating the Week of the Small Child, Dana set aside some class time for her kids so that she could explain her hobby to them. At two or three years of age, some of the children in her class think Miss Dana (as they call her) lives at the school and does nothing in life but keep them amused and occupied (that's okay, there's times when Miss Dana thinks that too) so for them to see that she has fun away from school like they do was important.
Her class watching carefully, Miss Dana shows them her driving position.
The weather held off long enough for the kart to be set up outside on Goddard's patio and where her class could make a fairly organized group. Miss Dana explained the parts of the go kart and the equipment she has to wear. For the most part they all seemed to be interested in Miss Dana's hobby - although some stayed interested longer than others. And of course there were several that couldn't get enough.
After getting the basics across to them, each girl and boy in her class had a chance to sit in the kart and have their picture taken behind the wheel. Some even tried on Miss Dana's helmet, struggling to keep their balance since the helmet was nearly bigger than most of them. The whole engagement only took an hour but it was fun to see the excitement on the little faces to see a "race car" on their school grounds. Later, video of Miss Dana in competition was planned. Thanks to my co-workers at INFONETICS who covered for me while I helped Dana with this project.
