February - Florida Spring Training Day 5: Rain Gives Us A Green Track
Okay, so
we got rained on. And it was a little cool (67). But a bad day at a
kart track in Florida is still better than a good day at the office.
Awoke to
pouring rain but by the time we got to the track, the rain had subsided
and beautiful blue sky could be seen to the west. Unfortunately, it
stayed there, tantalizingly, frustratingly close but wouldn't work its
way over the track. As a result, the track was very slow to dry and
required a lot of squeegee work on the big puddles.
The TS Racing guys came early to do a photo
shoot, interview and driving impressions of the Corsa
Veloce which they are the new U.S. importers of. The Veloce/Sonic
was fitted with rain tires and Mike did about a half dozen sessions
before turning the kart back over to the team to do some laps.
It wasn't
until the after 2:00 that the track was even close to dry enough for
slicks. As soon as it was, we sent Dana out on what was to become a
do-it-yourself kart control clinic. Dana barely had 10 laps in on the
very damp track when the rain came again and I thought we were done
for the day. But the rain stopped, the sun come out for about 2.66 minutes
and although still a little damp, the pavement was better than earlier.
The heavy rains had pretty much washed all the SKUSA and Corvette Club
rubber off the track and we were on a really green track. We made good
use of the conditions and were able to get the kart dialed in based
on Dana's suggestions. Everything we tried made an improvement so that
was very encouraging.
We're looking for a better day tomorrow and they're forecasting one.
(Formula One driver) Juan Pablo Montoya's
father, Juan Senior, is scheduled to be there with an Easykart for National
Kart News to review. That should be interesting.
I'm bringing donuts.
